London: Portrait of a City

John Bulmer The Punch Tavern, Fleet Street, 1969 When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.

the covenant

THE DELICATE DYNAMICS OF FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS *** The photo that inspired “A Word Outside,” taken by Bruce Weber as part of the Fall 1987. Let us now praise famous men: And some there be, which have no memorial; who are perished, as though they had never been; and are become as though they had never been born; and their children after them. But these were merciful men, whose righteousness hath not been forgotten. With their seed shall continually remain a good inheritance, and their children are within the covenant. Boxer, Manners & Masculinity

Boxing is a Gentleman's Sport , and Prize fighting was enormously popular during the second half of the eighteenth century in Britain. It became a fashion perhaps experienced as keenly by contemporary men of all classes as the “culture of sensibility” that describes this period of increasing politeness in society. This juxtaposition illustrates a vexing eighteenth-century issue: could a man be both polite and manly? The gentleman boxer synthesized traditionally held views of manliness with the civilizing effects of modern consumerism, acknowledged the concerns and aspirations of men of all classes, and responded to the political imperative for fighting men capable of forging a new nation bent on empire building. Of course, you can still use boxing as an integral part of your fitness routine. Boxing is a fantastic way to stay in shape and improve your fitness levels. Giving you an intense cardio workout, you can rely on boxing to improve respiratory function, enhance your hand-ey...

Wise Choices

It all comes from the classics. I succumb to classical music’s energy and mood-altering potential in the same way that one might from a line of cocaine or a glass of cold water on a sweltering day. Of all the things I can guarantee, this current state of affairs will take us slaloming through the gamut of feelings, all are important, all should be processed and sat with. If you want to be constructive, music is one way of doing this and to help with this, here is a selection of classical music pieces that cover every mood. ✠

God save the Queen

Two years after the end of world war two, and just five years until she would accede to the throne, Her Majesty is at it again, with a speech on her 21st Birthday that set the tone for her lifetime of service and duty to her country. This speech, delivered during a royal tour with her parents in South Africa, famously had the then Princess Elizabeth say: “I declare before you all, that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service.” Hard to say whether this speech is exceptional for its brilliant writing, it’s sentiment of duty and service to others, or the rare quality of being a powerful person delivering on a promise made in a speech. ‘All of the above’ is an option too.

"The Gentleman’s Clubs of London – Anthony Lejeune & Malcolm Lewis" Book

"A Club is a place where a man goes to be among his own kind." - Anthony Lejeune London is the mother city of clubs. There are famous clubs in many other cities around the World, but they all owe a debt to those original clubs of St James’s Street and Pall Mall; clubs which were designed to suit the life-style of the English gentleman; clubs which have played a significant role in the social and political history of Britain. During the ten years in which this book has been in preparation, a sad number of distinguished clubs have died and the English gentleman himself has become an endangered species. Already much of the material is irreplaceable, because it records things which have gone; but the book also – indeed mainly – celebrates an arcane tradition which is very much alive. Clubland is another country, redolent of the past, but, for its few thousand regular inhabitants, still an important part of their daily lives; a place occupied simultaneously by highly conventi...

Risky-listening

Whether it’s for work or leisure, most people wear headphones on a regular basis, so their impact on your health is an extremely important topic. If used in the right way they can help you with focus, speed and stress relief. After my research, I made a few changes to my own listening habits.

Geneva Seal

Class, elegance, and sophistication know no time limit. When instilled upon a tradition passed down from generation to generation, the refinement of a piece will look just as elegant today as it did decades or even centuries ago. Watchmaking is a traditional craft passed down from generation to generation. Despite all the innovations and technological advancements it has seen in the last few decades, the very essences of the craft are still used today. From timeless designs to classic engineering, a lot of the traditions established centuries ago are still alive and well in today’s world of haute horology. By reinventing and reusing the crafts established by the brand years ago, the Swiss luxury label is paying tribute to classic luxury timepieces and redefining them for a new and contemporary consumer base.

True Style

Growing up in Texas, Esquire editor in chief Jay Fielden shied away from traditional past times like academics and football, instead finding inspiration in magazines. Knowing he wanted to make it to New York one day propelled his pursuit of lifestyle representation.

A Gentleman in Isolation

Happily, I am in a different stage of life now. And I can make a conscious decision to make a corrective choice to live a slower, more deliberate and introspective lifestyle.

the 5am club

An early start could be the catalyst for getting results It’s never nice to start your day feeling rushed. Wake up at 5am, however, and you’ll suddenly have time to get up to date on current affairs, thoroughly wash and groom yourself and make a hearty – not to mention healthy – breakfast. And, with your pace significantly more leisurely, you’ll also never be late to work. Despite feeling eye-rubbingly lethargic when we get up, the early morning is the time of day when we actually have the highest reserves of energy – thanks to building them up during sleep – and by waking up early you can use that energy more efficiently. Use this peaceful time to gather your thoughts for the day ahead and enjoy the moments most people don’t get to see A caveat here though: rising early does necessitate going to bed early and it’s a lifestyle adjustment. Those who succeed with waking up early every morning do it every morning – so you’ll have to say good bye to those late Friday evenings in the pu...
