Boxer, Manners & Masculinity

Boxing is a Gentleman's Sport , and Prize fighting was enormously popular during the second half of the eighteenth century in Britain. It became a fashion perhaps experienced as keenly by contemporary men of all classes as the “culture of sensibility” that describes this period of increasing politeness in society. This juxtaposition illustrates a vexing eighteenth-century issue: could a man be both polite and manly? The gentleman boxer synthesized traditionally held views of manliness with the civilizing effects of modern consumerism, acknowledged the concerns and aspirations of men of all classes, and responded to the political imperative for fighting men capable of forging a new nation bent on empire building. Of course, you can still use boxing as an integral part of your fitness routine. Boxing is a fantastic way to stay in shape and improve your fitness levels. Giving you an intense cardio workout, you can rely on boxing to improve respiratory function, enhance your hand-ey...

Risky-listening

Whether it’s for work or leisure, most people wear headphones on a regular basis, so their impact on your health is an extremely important topic. If used in the right way they can help you with focus, speed and stress relief. After my research, I made a few changes to my own listening habits.

the 5am club

An early start could be the catalyst for getting results It’s never nice to start your day feeling rushed. Wake up at 5am, however, and you’ll suddenly have time to get up to date on current affairs, thoroughly wash and groom yourself and make a hearty – not to mention healthy – breakfast. And, with your pace significantly more leisurely, you’ll also never be late to work. Despite feeling eye-rubbingly lethargic when we get up, the early morning is the time of day when we actually have the highest reserves of energy – thanks to building them up during sleep – and by waking up early you can use that energy more efficiently. Use this peaceful time to gather your thoughts for the day ahead and enjoy the moments most people don’t get to see A caveat here though: rising early does necessitate going to bed early and it’s a lifestyle adjustment. Those who succeed with waking up early every morning do it every morning – so you’ll have to say good bye to those late Friday evenings in the pu...

Sex, Health and John Wilmot

Wilmot’s life, The II Earl of Rochester is one shrouded in mystery. Sex, scandal, poetry.. I became very interested in Rochester about 4 years ago. He seemed far more modern in his concerns that most of the writers of his time – and far funnier, too. I did quite a lot of reading about him then, and since... Well if nobody else is going to do this;  Vast sections of Rochester’s life are near-unbelievable. He started at Oxford when he was 12, lost his virginity at 13, was an alcoholic by 14, tried to abduct the woman who became his wife at 18, was a naval hero at 19, and then he really started getting going.  Condoms became incredibly popular and were even lauded by Rochester in 1667 as a protection against both disease and pregnancy in his Panegyrick Upon Cundums. He died later as a result of venereal disease at the age of 33. Rochester definitely had the right idea, but at the time, there was a popular belief that venereal disease could not be spread between men, so some me...
